To deal with the inconvenience the University Grants Commission, Ministry of HRD and the National Law Universities jointly took an initiative to conduct a common Law Admission test (CLAT) for admission to these law schools.

The seven national law universities signed a memorandum of understanding in 2007 for CLAT. These universities are NLIU, WBNUJS, NLSIU, NALSAR, HNLU, GNLU, and NLU.
The following national universities are participating in the test in the year 2009:
- Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab
- Chanakya National Law University, Patna
- Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow
- National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Kochi
For undergraduate program:
The total marks for the undergraduate program are 200 and the number of questions is 200. the subjects included are English including Comprehension (40 marks), General Knowledge/Current Affairs (50 Marks), Elementary mathematics (20 Marks) (Numerical ability), Legal Aptitude: Legal GK (45 Marks), Logical Reasoning (45 Marks).
For Postgraduate program:
The total marks for the postgraduate program is 200. the subjects covered are Law of Contracts, Law of Torts, Family Law, criminal law, Constitutional Law, and Legal Theory. There area unit fifty objective queries every cartage one mark, ten short questions each with 5 marks, 2 essay type questions of 50 marks each
